A Buyer's Guide to PVC Pipe Fittings: Bends, Tees and Junctions Explained

PVC fittings connect, redirect and terminate pipe runs, and getting the right one for the job makes an installation faster, neater and less prone to leaks. Here is a plain-English guide to the fitting types you will come across in our range.

Bends

Bends change the direction of a pipe run. They are usually specified by angle (for example 11.25°, 22.5°, 45° or 90°) and by radius -- a long-radius bend curves more gradually than a short-radius ("lobster") bend of the same angle. Long-radius bends reduce flow turbulence and pressure loss, which matters more on pressure lines; short-radius bends are more compact and useful in tight spaces such as drainage runs.

Tees and junctions

A tee (or junction) splits a single pipe run into two directions. An equal tee has outlets the same diameter as the main pipe, while a reducing junction steps down to a smaller diameter branch -- handy when a smaller feeder line comes off a larger mainline. Reducing junctions are described by both diameters, for example "95° 110mm" reducing to a smaller branch size.

Equal crosses

An equal cross splits a pipe run in four directions at once from a single fitting, which can simplify a layout compared to using two separate tees, provided your design calls for a true four-way split.

Adaptors and sockets

Adaptors and sockets join pipe to pipe, or pipe to a fitting with a different thread or material (for example a CL16 to AC/CL16-to-BSP male/female adaptor). Double sockets and repair couplings are especially useful for repairing a damaged pipe section without having to re-route the whole run.

Rodding eyes

A rodding eye provides a removable access point for clearing blockages or inspecting a drainage line, and is normally fitted at points in a stormwater or sewer run where maintenance access is likely to be needed.

Putting it together

Most installations use a combination of these fittings: bends to route around obstacles, tees or junctions to branch off a supply, and adaptors to transition between pipe classes or materials.
